Enhancing Workplace Harmony: The Importance of Employee Relations

 By Ishara

Healthy employee relations are necessary in today's high-speed business environment to create a wholesome work environment and maximize organizational productivity. Employee relations describe the relationship between employers and their employees in terms of communicating, managing conflicts, or handling the expectations of employees in the organization. Positive employee relations do not only elevate the morale of employees but also stimulate engagement and commitment in the workplace.

The Importance of Employee Relations

The importance of employee relations cannot be overemphasized. The SHRM, in one of its surveys (2021), shows that good employee relationships in organizations are characterized by higher levels of employee engagement and lower levels of turnover. Where employees are listened to and valued, they are very much interested in contributing to the organizational goals positively. Good employee relations also minimize the possibility of disputes or grievances that might arise hence leading to better harmony among employees.

Further, positive relationships of the employees foster an openness culture with the employer. Communication of employers towards the employees creates a feeling of belongingness and commitment. This further develops openness at the organizational change stage and eradicates anxiety and uncertainty which in turn cause vagueness in the minds of employees (Brewster et al., 2016).

It is also the case that good employee relations can have a direct positive effect on organizational performance. According to studies, every organization that experiences good employee relations tends to have highly engaged employees who are willing to put in their best efforts on behalf of the organization. Indeed, highly engaged employees increase productivity and guarantee better customer service, hence an avenue for good organizational performance (Kahn, 1990).

The Influence of Employee Relations on Organizational Culture

Employee relations are very instrumental in building organizational culture. A healthy relationship between employees and employers fosters a reinforcing environment wherein individuals feel recognized and appreciated. On the other hand, one may be assured of very poor employee relations leading to the threat of toxic work cultures that entice turnover, reducing morale and productivity.

In addition, good employee relations result in innovation and creativity in a workplace. When employees are confident of expressing their opinions and concerns, they contribute more with innovative answers driving the growth of an organization. Collaboration and open dialogue inspire an environment for creativity. This is true because one factor that influences creative behavior as presented by Amabile (1996) is the attitude towards collaboration or open-mindedness.

Good employee relationships depend mainly on management for their building and nourishment. Leaders are supposed to communicate actively with their teams, sympathize with, and understand them. When the employees find management approachable and responsive to their feedback, it gives them a sense of security through which they may express themselves freely.

In addition, management is supposed to encourage training and development programs for the workers to acquire many abilities to solve various problems that are likely to happen at work. The provision of resources and opportunities for personal and professional development shows concern for safety and growth of the workers.

  5. You'd probably have heard the phrase "humans are social creatures". You need others to survive! Same principle applies especially when working in an organisation. It is with vital importance that you must have harmony among the employees or otherwise, everything would fall apart eventually.

Unfortunately it is not an aspect even the wise top management personnel wouldnt consider since they're into "profit making" but it's too late when they realise. Having good employee relations is crucial to organisation's survival.
